What is the keto diet?

The ketogenic diet, or keto for short, is a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat eating plan. The standard keto diet consists of approximately 70-75% fat, 20% protein, and only 5-10% carbohydrates — typically fewer than 50 grams of carbs per day. This dramatic reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis, where it burns fat for fuel instead of glucose.

How ketosis works

Normally, your body uses glucose (from carbohydrates) as its primary energy source. When you restrict carbs to under 50 grams per day, your body runs out of glucose and begins breaking down fat into molecules called ketones. Your brain and body can use ketones for energy. This metabolic switch typically takes 2-4 days of strict carb restriction.

In ketosis, your body becomes a fat-burning machine. Insulin levels drop, which helps your body release stored fat for energy. Many people report reduced hunger and increased energy once they are fully adapted to ketosis.

What to eat on keto

  • Meat and poultry: Beef, chicken, turkey, bacon
  • Fish and seafood: Salmon, tuna, shrimp, sardines
  • Eggs: Whole eggs are a keto staple
  • Cheese and dairy: Hard cheeses, heavy cream, butter, Greek yogurt (full-fat)
  • Healthy fats: Olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, nuts and seeds
  • Low-carb vegetables: Spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, asparagus
  • Beverages: Water, coffee, tea — calculate your needs with our Water Intake Calculator

What to avoid on keto

  • Grains: wheat, rice, oats, corn
  • Sugar: soda, candy, baked goods, fruit juice
  • Most fruits: apples, bananas, oranges, grapes
  • Starchy vegetables: potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots
  • Legumes: beans, lentils, chickpeas

Benefits of the keto diet

Studies show the keto diet can produce significant weight loss, especially in the first 3-6 months. Benefits include rapid initial weight loss (largely water weight), reduced appetite, improved blood sugar control, lower triglycerides, and increased HDL cholesterol. For people with type 2 diabetes, keto can help improve insulin sensitivity.

Risks and side effects

The transition to ketosis can cause the "keto flu" — headaches, fatigue, irritability, and nausea that typically last 3-7 days. Other potential risks include:

  • Nutrient deficiencies from restricted food choices
  • Constipation from low fiber intake
  • Increased LDL cholesterol in some people
  • Kidney stones in susceptible individuals
  • Difficulty sustaining the diet long-term

Keto and medical weight loss

Combining the keto diet with GLP-1 medications can be powerful. GLP-1 medications reduce appetite, making it easier to stick to a strict keto diet without feeling deprived. The medications also help control blood sugar, complementing keto's insulin-lowering effects. If you have a BMI of 30 or higher, you may qualify for GLP-1 treatment.

The bottom line

The keto diet is an effective short-term weight loss strategy for many people. However, it requires significant dietary changes and may be difficult to sustain long-term. For best results, combine keto with adequate protein intake, proper hydration, and consider medical support if you struggle with hunger or have significant weight to lose.
